In Conversation with Artist Lizzy Stageman and Jeweller Amelia Hancock of Artefact
When two creatives from different disciplines collaborate, the result often transcends expectations. This is exactly what the JOURNEY Collection achieves—a beautiful synergy between Lizzy Stageman’s evocative artistry and Amelia Hancock’s intricate jewellery designs. We spoke to Lizzy and Amelia about their creative processes, sources of inspiration, and how their collaboration brought their unique crafts together.
The Favourite Piece: A Story in Every Detail
Lizzy:
The Finding My Place ring has a special place in my heart. When I created the original artwork, it was a moment of clarity—a realisation of where I was meant to be. It allowed me to embrace my story and share it through my art. That piece has been a turning point for me, and I hope it serves as a meaningful reminder for others who have found their own sense of belonging.
Amelia:
For me, it’s the Yalul nested pendants. I love the way they represent connection—especially when people are apart. They come as a set, fitting perfectly together, so one can be worn by you and the other by someone close to your heart. It’s such a powerful yet simple symbol of togetherness, and that emotional depth makes it really special.
Creating Meaning: Inside Their Creative Processes
Lizzy:
Storytelling is at the core of everything I do. I think of each piece as a way to share a narrative that needs to be told. Colours often set the mood when I’m conveying feelings or memories, while black and white helps bring focus to messages that need clarity. It’s all about creating something that resonates with people on a personal level.
Amelia:
My process starts with gathering ideas and sketches—I love brainstorming concepts and seeing them evolve. I work a lot with jewellery wax, shaping and carving designs by hand before casting them into metal. The final polishing is always a highlight—it’s the moment the piece truly comes to life.
Inspired By Life: The Stories Behind Their Creations
Lizzy:
Everyday life inspires me—my experiences, the people I meet, the places I go. I’m constantly observing colour and beauty in my surroundings. My children are also a huge influence; they inspire so much of my work, particularly in the series of three pieces I often create. It’s all about capturing those connections.
Amelia:
I’m drawn to the timeless beauty of antique jewellery and the craftsmanship behind it. I can spend hours exploring museum archives or wandering through antique shops. The MET Museum archives are a favourite of mine—there’s always something that sparks a new idea. Museums and galleries are also constant sources of inspiration.
On How the Worlds of Art and Jewellery Collide
Lizzy:
Jewellery feels like a form of wearable art—it’s a way to carry a story or emotion with you. Both art and jewellery invite people to connect with something deeply personal, whether it’s a memory, a feeling, or a sense of identity. Together, they celebrate heritage, spark conversation, and remind us to find beauty in the little things.
Amelia:
I’ve always loved the idea of jewellery being wearable art. It’s a privilege to work with Lizzy and translate her paintings into something people can carry with them every day. Jewellery and art share this incredible blend of creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural meaning. They tell stories in ways that feel intimate and universal all at once.
A Partnership Built on Shared Stories
Lizzy:
Amelia and I share such similar values when it comes to our craft—authenticity, storytelling, and creating something truly meaningful. I love how her jewellery stands out in the same way my art does. She brought my sketches to life in ways I couldn’t have imagined, and that collaboration made the process even more special.
Amelia:
Collaborating with Lizzy felt so natural. Her work has this incredible depth and storytelling that I’ve always admired. I’d been wanting to do something collaborative for a while, and when the opportunity came up with Lizzy, I knew we could create something truly unique together.
The JOURNEY Collection is more than just a meeting of art and jewellery—it’s a shared narrative brought to life. Lizzy and Amelia have created a collection that resonates with meaning, offering pieces that are both personal and timeless.
